MOUNTAIN RIVER VENISON
The Mountain River Venison export plant is located just South of Christchurch. Doug Hood and his family founded Mountain River in 1994. Their vision was to produce top quality venison products from their farm. Today the business has grown and they now source deer from throughout the South Island. There products are now exported to countries such as Japan, USA and Germany.
The Mountain River deer are raised as close to nature as possible, their diet consists of grass and during the colder months they are occasionally fed hay, grain or silage. Only the best animals are selected for processing according to certain age criteria and the standards adopted by the Cervena marketing program.
Farmed venison has a more delicate flavour compared to wild venison. It is a very lean meat and is high in nutritional qualities. It’s simple to cook and because of the modern packing technology can be stored fresh for up to 14 weeks.
