With Artisan cheese factory’s springing up all over New Zealand we have select few available at Rare Fare. They have been selected for the quality of cheese they produce. While our focus at Rare Fare is to support small New Zealand producers there are certain cheeses that there is simply no New Zealand equivalent for like Buffalo Mozzarella which is ordered on a monthly basis and comes direct to New Zealand from it’s production in Italy. Our current New Zealand cheese suppliers are listed below.

EVANSDALE

Evansdale was the first Artisan cheese factory in New Zealand and after more than 25 years in operation is still a family run business. Evansdale cheeses are produced in coastal Otago and our range includes the multi award winning white moulded farmhouse blue and the farmhouse brie.

Green Girl

GREENGIRL ORGANIC LABNA

Middle Eastern yoghurt cheese produced in Blenheim. Made by mixing organic yoghurt, olive oil, lemon juice and salt. The labna has a lovely tangy flavour and is ideal on salads or spread on crackers etc. It is produced in four flavours chilli, curry, mixed herbs or plain.

Gruff Junction

GRUFF JUNCTION

“Made on the farm from teat to table”
Created in 2006 , Gruff Junction goats cheeses are hand made locally just 30 minutes from Christchurch on the banks of Lake Ellesmere. 250 Saanen goats are farmed by Ev Moorhead in Greenpark while daughter Anna hand makes the range of Gruff Junction goats cheeses. All Gruff Junction Goats cheeses are made with vegetarian rennet and with no artificial preservatives or additives. In 2007 the Selwyn Farmhouse Cumin received a Gold Medal at the Annual Cuisine Magazine Cheese awards.

Blue River Dairy

BLUE RIVER DAIRY

Nestled on the banks of the Clutha River. Blue River dairy is a Southland based company that is involved in every aspect of production from milking to the world market. The unique flavour of Blue River cheeses comes from the natural grazing of their sheep and the traditional cheese making techniques used by the cheese makers. Currently available are Pecorino, Feta, Halloumi and Springhills.

Gibbston Valley Cheese

GIBBSTON VALLEY CHEESE COMPANY

Situated in the beautiful alpine region of Queenstown. Gibbston Valley Cheese Company produces handcrafted cheeses to match the modern wine styles of New Zealand. All milk for the cheeses is sourced from the nearby Southland region.
The following three cheeses are currently available at Rare Fare. Hokonui (sheep’s milk pyramid), Brinza (European style feta) and Balfour (hard pressed sheep’s milk round)

TALBOT FOREST

Based in the Central South Island town of Geraldine. All Talbot forest cheeses are made by using vegetarian rennet. Talbot Forest make a wide range of cheeses using both cows and goats milk. Currently we are stocking the Parmesan, Mesopatamia Blue, Feta, Waxed Cheddar Logs and Blue Brie all of these cheeses are made with cow’s milk.
